Travelling to Wilpena Pound
Travelling to Wilpena Pound
It's been millenia in the making – and now the world’s oldest mountain range is calling out to you! Discovery Resorts - Wilpena Pound is located within the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, 430 kilometres north of Adelaide.
It's very easy to get to, as the roads are sealed and well maintained.
Once you’re at your destination, the resort is both a relaxing sanctuary and your launch point for a holiday full of experiences.
Adelaide-Clare-Wilpena Pound:
Take the Northern Expressway out of Adelaide, then follow the Horrock’s Highway to Clare in the world-renowned Clare Valley wine region.
Enjoy the area’s award-winning wineries and restaurants, before moving on.
From Clare, you can drive via Jamestown or Gladstone as you head to Melrose, on to Quorn and then to Discovery Resorts - Wilpena Pound.
Adelaide – Port Augusta-Wilpena Pound:
A well-travelled route is the A1 to Port Augusta, the last major town before the Flinders Ranges.
Take a break and then follow the signs to Quorn, and then to Discovery Resorts - Wilpena Pound.
Flying:
There are no direct flights from Adelaide to Wilpena Pound.
At the time of writing, you can fly Adelaide to Port Augusta, then Port Augusta to Wilpena Pound. Alternatively, fly from Adelaide to Whyalla, then drive to Wilpena Pound.
Train:
The Indian Pacific is one of the world’s most iconic train journeys, travelling between Perth (the Indian Ocean) and Sydney (the Pacific Ocean).
The train stops in Port Augusta. From here you can hire a car and drive to Discovery Resorts - Wilpena Pound.
On your return, you can resume your train journey or continue south to Adelaide by car.
You can do the same if you are travelling on The Ghan.
What to wear
In the summer, you can expect temperatures of 38C and higher. Winter is considerably cooler, with the average high ranging from 13C to 16C, often with wonderful days of blue sky and sunshine, which make for perfect stargazing nights.
Spring weather brings out the region’s beautiful wildflowers and spring storms get creeks flowing, which is a sight in itself.
In summer, you’ll need to pack for sun protection, so a hat is essential, as are light clothes that breathe well.
At all times of the year, make sure your wear good shoes suitable for hiking – and break them in before you leave home. There’s nothing worse than blisters on the first day of your holiday!
In all seasons, it’s best to choose layers, so that you can take off a layer as the day warms up, and vice versa.
Travel Insurance
We highly recommend travel insurance. Our remote and unique locations make for the perfect holiday destination. It is important to note that travelling to paradise comes with risks that are out of our control, and yours. For this reason, we highly recommend that all of our guests purchase travel insurance prior to travelling.
Please take the time to review your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered in the unlikely event that your travel plans are disrupted due to weather or acts of God.
