Discovery Resorts - Undara is the perfect gateway to the Australian Outback. Just a short drive from Cairns and Townsville, our resort provides a range of facilities to ensure our guests' comfort and convenience.
Located in the Gulf Savannah region of Tropical North Queensland, Australia, Undara captures the essence of this ancient continent through the remarkable Undara Lava Tubes. Immerse yourself in this timeless landscape as you explore the path of the volcano and experience the unique charm of sleeping in a vintage railway carriage.

What months does Discovery Resorts – Undara Operate?
Discovery Resorts – Undara operates during dry season, typically late March until late October each year.
When is the wet season?
Wet season at Undara is typically from late October through to early March, tours may not be operational during this period.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is at 10.30am.
How long does it take to get here from Cairns and Townsville?
Approx 3-4 hrs from Cairns, and 4-5 hours from Townsville.
What are the operating hours?
Most facilities are open 7 days a week during open season during the following hours:
Reception: 7.30am - 5pm (guests can check in at the bar until 8.30pm)
Bush Breakfast: 7.00am - 8.00am (Bookings essential)
Fettler’s Iron Pot Bistro:12.00pm - 1.30pm & 6.00pm - 8.00pm (Bookings preferred)
Saloon Car Bar: 7.30am - 8pm daily
Is there mobile phone coverage?
Mobile phone reception on the property is generally weak, and only accessible for Telstra carriers.
Is there Internet and how much does it cost?
There is limited free Wi-Fi available at the property in the main Bistro area.
How do you get to Discovery Resorts – Undara?
Our property is easily accessible to on-road travellers. The road to Undara is sealed the entire way from Cairns, Townsville and Georgetown, so whether you’re in a car, towing a caravan or travelling in a 4WD, you’ll enjoy the picturesque landscape of Tropical North Queensland as you leave the coast and start to head inland to Undara.
For those not travelling in a car, (or maybe up for some more adventure?) there are also options to take the Savannahlander train, stopping in the lush rainforests of Kuranda before continuing through the Gulf Savannah to Mt. Surprise, Einasleigh and Forsayth.
PROPERTY FEATURES:
Do the rooms have heating and cooling?
We have air conditioning in our Pioneer Huts and Homestead rooms, and our Railway Carriages have a ceiling fan.
Are there medical facilities available?
We offer first aid at the property and are serviced by the Royal Flying Doctors.
What laundry facilities are available?
There are 4 washing machines in total. 2 located in the camp site amenities in powered sites, and 2 located in the top amenities near the unpowered sites.
The cost is $4 wash, gold coins only. Washing powder is available from Undara Central.
Please use clotheslines provided.
Are there tea and coffee facilities?
Tea and coffee facilities are available in Railway Carriages, Pioneer Huts, and Homesteads.
Are there cooking facilities?
Yes, there are 4 free shared gas BBQs and stoves. 1 is in Safari Shelter and 3 gas BBQ’s and a stove located in Swag Tent Village. You will need to bring your own cutlery, crockery, pots, pans etc.
FOOD & BEVERAGES
What are the Food and Beverage Options at the property?
Enjoy our breakfast, lunch, and dinner options including:
Bush Breakfast 7am – 8am
Start your day with an authentic outdoor breakfast at the Ringers' Camp, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Australian bush. Cook your toast over the campfire, sip billy tea and freshly brewed coffee, and watch out for native wildlife like Kookaburras, Currawongs, and Magpies.
Fettler's Iron Pot Bistro (Lunch 12.00pm – 1.30pm & Dinner 6.00pm – 8pm)
Indulge in genuine country cooking and Outback hospitality at Fettler's Iron Pot Bistro, a fully licensed establishment. Our a la carte dinner menu brings back forgotten taste sensations with a modern twist.
Saloon Car Bar (7.30-8pm daily)
Relax in the tranquil ambiance of Undara and enjoy a coffee with friends at our Saloon Car Bar. Choose from a range of Australian and imported beers, wines, spirits, or freshly ground espresso coffee. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
Please note that all dining facilities at Discovery Resorts - Undara are closed from November to March.
Is there a shop nearby?
No, we recommend bringing everything you need during your stay.
However, at Undara Central you can purchase a variety of snacks, lollies, ice, firewood, non-alcoholic drinks, souvenirs, and basic supplies as well as make bookings for tours and meals.
Is there a petrol station and grocery store at Undara?
Yes, diesel and unleaded petrol are available on site. LP gas bottles can be refilled.
TOURS:
Archway Explorer (2 Hours): Departs various times daily (8.00am, 10.30am, 1.00pm, 3.30pm). All tours are subject to availability.
Wind Tunnel Explorer (2 Hours): Departs various times daily. Available mid-April – September. (8.00am, 10.30am). All tours are subject to availability.
Wildlife at Sunset (2 Hours): Varies between 5pm-6pm. Ask at Undara Central for the current departure time.
What level of fitness do I need for the tours? What do I need to pack?
You must have a good level of fitness with no limited mobility. Closed in shoes, hats, torch, camera, and water bottles are recommended for all tours.
OTHER:
Can I have a campfire on the property?
In line with the National Parks’ management plan for preserving natural habitats, firewood collection is not permitted on Undara or neighbouring properties. Firewood can be purchased on site.
Campfires are only permitted in the designated campfire pits. Please ensure your campfire is controlled and fully extinguished upon departure.
Are dogs allowed in the campground?
No, Domestic animals are not permitted at Discovery Resorts - Undara or the National Park. It is also important that you do not feed the native wildlife.
