Bushwalking
Bushwalking
Discover the natural beauty of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges on foot. Explore the diverse and striking landscape of Adnyamathanha Country from one of many walking trails surrounding Wilpena Pound Resort.
Short walks
Travellers seeking a more leisurely pace can head west along Wilpena Creek to the much-photographed Cazneaux Tree, or wend their way towards Hills Homestead, venturing off to the Wangarra Lookouts for spectacular views across the landscape. And of course, there’s the walk to Old Wilpena Station, a must-do for an inspiring dose of history and native scenery.
Longer hikes
For adventure lovers, take the full day hike towards St Mary Peak, the highest point in the Flinders Ranges (and sacred to the Adnyamathanha people, who ask that you do not climb it). You can scale the rocky inclines to the stunning Mount Ohlssen Bagge, or observe the adaptive nature of the region’s bushland on Drought Busters Hike. Edeowie Gorge is another gem to discover, especially following rain when the waterfalls are flowing.
Guided Walk: Wilpena Pound
Learn about the history of the region and the challenges faced by the Hills family settlers at the turn of the century. This is a leisurely walk along Wilpena Creek into Wilpena Pound and on to the Old Hills Homestead. An optional hike up to the Wangarra Hill lookout offers panoramic views of Wilpena Pound. Take in the beauty of the great river red gums as you enjoy cake and coffee near the Homestead. Easy walking. 2 hours approximately, 2.5 kms return.
See the Visitor Information Centre to book.
